Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal
On 16 December 1971, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal of 'A' Squadron, POONA HORSE, voluntarily moved to reinforce 'B' Squadron at Shakargarh sector, on receiving an urgent call for reinforcements. Enroute, his tanks came under heavy fire from enemy strong points and RCL gun nests. Destroying the enemy's opposition, he reached 'B' Squadron position and engaged the enemy in a fierce battle. Ten enemy tanks were destroyed, of which Khetarpal personally destroyed four. He was badly injured and was ordered to pull back, which he declined. He shot down one more enemy tank, before a second enemy shell landed on his Centurion tank 'Famagusta' and killed him. For displaying the most conspicuous bravery and for making the supreme sacrifice, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was awarded the Param Vir Chakra (Posthumous).
